Does Your Dog Need An Electric Dog Fence?

Pet owners do many things to keep their pets safe. When it comes to dogs, it can involve a series of duties, such as walking them, giving them their shots, taking them regularly to the veterinarian, and even getting a dog fence installed in order to keep them from wandering off or running after something or someone.

But many owners struggle with the decision on whether or not to get their pet an electric dog fence. They wonder if it’s inhumane and going too far. To decide whether an electric dog fence is a good idea, you should consider its advantages and disadvantages.

An electronic dog fence works by burying an electic cable under the ground, marking with it the desired perimeter of the electric fence. Then, a receiver is placed in the dog's collar, which gives the dog a small static charge whenever it tries to cross the cable.

An advantage of an electronic dog fence is that it doesn't block the view of your yard, like a wooden fence would do. You also don’t have to deal with things like zoning laws since you don’t have to get permits as you aren’t actually building anything. An electric dog fence is a great way of keeping a dog in without having to make major changes to your property.

There are also some disadvantages, of course. An electronic fence will keep your dog in, but it won't keep other dogs out, like a regular fence would. Regular fences present a small obstacle for thieves who want to break into your house. Some houses also actually look better with fences as well. Electric dog fences can be overcome if you set them so mild that your dog can barely feel the shock, specially if your dog gets too excited. And once they do cross it, they may actually not want to come back because crossing over the perimeter fence means that they get shocked, and they may choose to avoid it altogether.

An electric dog fence is a good idea for keeping your dog inside. Unlike other fences, it doesn't block the way or view of your yard. However, if your dog manages to get to the other side of the electronic dog fence, it'll have problems coming back.
