Can I brush mats out of my poodles coat?
Min poodles coat has grown out. After bath I let him dry and them went to brush him. He is matted at the skin. I was able to brush most matting out a few minutes ago and I am giving him a break. Any tips for poodle grooming well taken.
with a poodle, there's a few key things you should remember.
always make sure you can brush and COMB through the coat from nose to tail before giving the bath. The water will only tighten any existing knots and tangles
also, you don't want to just "let him dry". Their coat is very curly, and will curl together and tighten even more. Their coat is meant to be blow dried. It will help to straighten the hairs, which will make combing much easier
keep an eye on the skin if you attempt to brush and dematt. The skin can be very very sensitive, and to much brushing over and over again in the same spot can result in something called "brush burn" It's when the skin gets irritated by having the brush tines rake over the skin over and over again. Like little tiny cuts and scratches. They can turn into dreaded hot spots.
The key to remember is that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Comb and brush on a daily basis to preven the mats and tangles from forming in the first place. And above all, do no harm. If dematting is going to be painful for the dog, then it's in his best interest to just shave down and start over. Humanity before Vanity.

When it is matted to the skin, sometimes it is best to shave the mats out.

regular brushings will prevent matting. It is much easier to prevent them than remove them. Shave him down and make sure to brush him regularly to keep the mats from coming back.
